Devotion & Study
All Christians are called to be regular in personal prayer and in their reading and study of Scripture. At St. Thomas, many opportunities for devotional and Scriptural study are provided.
Instruction in the Faith
Personal Devotion
It is the duty of every Christian to diligently read Holy Scripture and to pray, which we call personal devotions. While for some, simply diving into the reading of Scripture can be extremely helpful, some Christians, and especially those for whom this is a newer practice, might find that daunting.
St. Thomas maintains a RightNow Media account, giving all parishioners and guests of St. Thomas free access the world’s largest streaming library of video Bible study resources. This extensive library has more than 20,000 videos taught by leaders like Francis Chan, Jennie Allen, J.D. Greear, Dr. Tony Evans, and many more.
St. Thomas believes that RightNow Media is a tool that can help you live out your faith in every area of your life—at home, at work, and in your community. In addition to series on books of the Bible, RightNow Media has videos for everyone in your family on a variety of topics like marriage, parenting, personal finances, mental health, and more. There’s even a library just for kids with over 2,000 safe, entertaining videos. RightNow Media has a free app that’s available on all major streaming devices so you and your family can access content anywhere, anytime.
Parish & Daily Devotionals
To support personal prayer and devotion, seasonal and daily devotionals are available from the Church. These include the Forward Day by Day booklets, and others.
In Advent and Lent each year, seasonal devotions are prepared to assist the whole parish in making corporate devotion, whether through the contemplation of the same Scriptural reflections, or through the joint memorization and prayer of Scripture.
In addition to physical devotions, online devotions are a wonderful way to get devotionals sent to your inbox each day. St. Thomas commends The Living Church Daily Devotional for use.
Group Studies
Tuesdays and Wednesdays
We believe that “Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation.” (BCP 868) As such it is important for individual Christians to be familiar with Holy Scripture. In addition to devotionals, multiple study groups gather to “read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest” the word of God. (BCP 184)
Study groups generally meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please contact the Office to find out more about each group, including what the current studies are focused on and when and where they meet.
Order of St. Luke
The Order of St. Luke is an international and ecumenical organization devoted to healing prayer. OSL members at St. Thomas meet together weekly to offer healing prayer in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to those in any form of need. OSL members regularly participate in our weekday mass of intercession and healing, where we pray for all those in need and for the healing of the world, as well as offer the laying on of hands for any present who request it, and anointing with holy oil for those who are sick. The St. Thomas chapter of the Order is called the New Hope Healing Community. Further details can be found here.
The Order of St. Luke is quite active in the Diocese of Central Florida, and there are regular conferences, gatherings, and other events which members may participate in as a part of the wider Church community.
Quiet Days
Day-long retreats focused on teaching, prayer, and quiet reflection with God, are regularly offered throughout the year, particularly in Advent and Lent. These give believers an opportunity to step back from their regular rhythm of life and offer their time to hear what God is saying in their own lives.
